Maybe you can’t see the floor, but the ground is carrying you

Maybe you can’t see the floor, but the ground is carrying you

I love these encounters in and with the arts, when they are pure. And, of course, an art that is evoking this subtle, yet all pervading, undeniable presence of something greater.

As a curator and art scientist, I have been asked the question „What does the artist want to tell?“ more times than I can remember. I wonder sometimes – does it say more about an art to which people hardly can relate (anymore) or does it say more about us and that we have forgotten to open up to our own answers and to be touched by our inner self or maybe both?

Solid Light

Solid Light

I was amazed when I was talking with this young girl who was visiting Anthony McCall’s exhibition at Pioneer Works in New York with her family. She didn’t hesitate for a moment as the words came out of her mouth clearly, without a single 'hm', 'well'. So fresh, so eloquent, and so aware. Yes, you don’t have to travel far! A split second can offer us a complete shift in perception. Art can be such a birthplace of new realities, so it can be a piece of music or a poem – really any creation or form of expression that embodies and allows a present encounter.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum

OM MANI PADME HUM – can you see it written? This is one of the highest Mantras in Tibetan Buddhism about compassion. And even if you are not familiar with it or do not immediately recognize it – the frequency it carries is in some way palpable in the room, whether you believe in energy or not. What a gesture of light, silence and poetry these works radiate! “Everything is Energy and that's all there is to it.” – Albert Einstein

Where is the kid, I was?

Where is the kid, I was?

When I first hold the white square cardboard box in my hands that, outside at the side, had written these letters in thin handwriting on a ripped off strip of yellow tape, something kind of shook me. It’s one of these universal and yet so intimate questions that can, in fact, be asked by any of us. I had goose bumps while slowly opening it and going, one by one, through the 31 photographs by the French artist Laetitia Vançon – the magical box content.

What am I hiding?

What am I hiding?

I had to come back to the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich a second time in a short row as the photographs of Gillian Wearing under the title “Signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say” really struck me the other day.

I was wondering why?
